Sustainability
05 June 2024
In recent years, sustainability has become a vital consideration in the event industry. At Gustaf, we are increasingly recognising the importance of incorporating sustainable practices into our operations. From selecting eco-friendly venues to managing waste responsibly, the shift towards sustainability is reshaping the industry for the better.
As a sustainable event planner, we're not just the orchestrators of gatherings; we're also preservers of its future. The journey towards sustainability isn't just a choice—it's our duty.
Event planners should always be considerate when it comes to their environmental footprint, and sustainability should be at the forefront of every decision we make. We understand that it's never easy to be 100% sustainable but by prioritising some key techniques, we can make a difference however small or large.
Whether it's larger tasks such as waste reduction or finding suitable venues, to the smaller things such as using Ecosia or using sustainable coffee pods in the office, we are able to minimise our carbon footprint and carbon emissions however big or small.
By adopting a holistic approach, we ensure that events not only leave a lasting impression for attendees but also contribute positively to the planet. There is no excuse in modern day for something of the contrary!
Selecting eco-friendly venues is essential for reducing the environmental impact we have as event planners. Sustainable venues prioritise energy efficiency, renewable resources, and waste management. By partnering with such venues, we can showcase our commitment to sustainability and offer clients environmentally responsible options.
Choosing a venue that not only meets your needs but also meets the needs of the planet isn't always easy, but that's where we come in, the extra mile is not only worth it for you but worthwhile for the longevity of our planet. Find out more about our vital venue finding services here
Waste management is critical in mitigating the environmental impact of events. As event coordinators, we are responsible for implementing strategies to minimise waste generation and maximise recycling and composting efforts. By diverting waste from landfills, reducing pollution and promoting sustainable practices among attendees, we are able to bring the goal of a sustainable planet one step closer.
Sustainability is something that really rubs off, setting an example from the start, and making sustainable practices accessible to all attendees makes sustainability and our goals so much easier to implement. Unfortunately, herd mentality is a thing when it comes to litter and waste, set an example from the start of your event and reap the benefits! ... It also saves on cleanup.
Food waste is a significant issue at events, often plagued with abundance, that's where planning is crucial for sustainability. It's always difficult to calculate the exact amount of food and drink necessary but investing extra time and effort in calculating how much supply is needed plays a huge role in helping out our planet and saves on catering costs.
Planners should always be taking proactive measures to minimise food waste. Collaborating with caterers to plan menus, control portions, and donate surplus food to those in need are just some of the many strategies that can be incorporated to minimise food waste. By tackling it head-on we can make a positive impact on the environment and support our local communities in the process.
Another greener step we can make is that of reusing and repurposing. The reusing and repurposing landscape has boomed over the last five years. People now understand that this is something not to be looked down upon, through their own personal success stories, people are now often more open to the idea that not everything has to be brand spanking new and the benefits that this can bring.
Reusable décor, tableware, and signage are some of the many many ways that sustainable event planning can be achieved. By embracing the culture of reusing and repurposing, we can reduce resource consumption and promote sustainability among attendees. Creative approaches to repurposing materials add character and uniqueness to events while minimising impact.
Not every event is going to be suitable for these measures and we understand that not every client will be open to the idea, but knowing there is an option for something else (once again, a more cost-effective something else) could just be the persuading factor for convincing a team to go green. It's a win-win and something that's always worth discussing with clients.
Hosting sustainable events offers various benefits, including enhanced brand reputation, cost savings, and community engagement. By demonstrating a commitment to sustainability, we can attract eco-conscious attendees and put ourselves at the forefront of event planners who make an impact. Sustainable events leave a positive legacy. At Gustaf it's no different, if you care about the environment and want to make a change, look no further for your next event.
While sustainability presents challenges, it also fuels innovation and creativity in the industry. Sustainable event planning should leverage emerging technologies and creative strategies to overcome obstacles and achieve sustainability goals. By embracing innovation and creativity, we can create memorable experiences that resonate with attendees while staying green.
